Lukas “TJ” Atwell
I am the founder and principal consultant at Atwell Communications LLC, a veteran-owned communications and leadership advisory based in New Hampshire.
My work focuses on crisis communication, risk communication, leadership messaging, and professional instruction for organizations operating in public, political, or high-consequence environments. I support leaders and teams who need to communicate clearly, credibly, and responsibly when the stakes are real.
Professional Background
I spent more than two decades serving as a communication professional within the U.S. military and government, culminating in senior public affairs and advisory roles. My work has included advising commanders and executive leaders, managing public affairs operations, leading communication teams, and instructing professionals responsible for engaging the public and the media.
I have served as a Deputy Public Affairs Director for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, and previously as a senior enlisted advisor and public affairs chief within the U.S. Marine Corps. I have led communication strategy and operations during routine activities and during complex, time-sensitive situations involving public scrutiny, operational risk, and institutional credibility.
In addition to operational roles, I have served as a Public Affairs Leadership Instructor at the Defense Information School, where I taught crisis communication, communication planning, media engagement, leadership decision-making, and ethical considerations to military and government professionals.
Consulting Practice
Atwell Communications grew out of years of providing advisory and instructional support alongside full-time government service. What began as targeted consulting for professionals in the trades and construction industry evolved into a formal practice serving government agencies, municipalities, and small organizations that need senior-level communication support without a full-time hire.
My approach is practical and experience-based. I do not offer generic templates or theoretical frameworks divorced from real conditions. Engagements are shaped around the organization’s mission, constraints, leadership structure, and public environment.
